Dubai Metro Blue Line: First station, train capacity, key features explained

1. A Historic Launch
On June 9, 2025, the foundation stone of the Dubai Metro Blue Line was laid as part of the Metro’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The date marks a symbolic continuation of the Metro’s legacy, with the number nine holding historic significance throughout its timeline.
2. Route Overview & Connectivity
The Blue Line will consist of 14 stations spread over 30 km, with:
A 21 km branch from Creek Station (Green Line) through Festival City, Ras Al Khor, International City, Silicon Oasis, and ending at Academic City.
A 9 km branch from Centrepoint (Red Line) via Mirdif and Al Warqa, merging with the other line at International City 1.
Three major interchange stations: Creek, Centrepoint, and International City 1.
The track will include 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km elevated sections, including a 1.3 km metro bridge over Dubai Creek—the city’s first such bridge.
3. World’s Tallest Metro Station
The Emaar Properties Station will be the tallest metro station in the world, standing 74 meters high.
Designed with striking architecture, it will span 11,000 square meters across three levels and is expected to serve up to 160,000 passengers daily by 2040.
The design features premium materials like limestone, bronze panels, granite flooring, and glass ceilings under the theme “Gateway to the Future”.
Facilities will include EV charging points, drop-off zones, parking, and landscaped areas.
4. Capacity, Speed & City Impact
The project includes 168 trains (including Metro and Tram), expanding Dubai’s rail network to 131 km and 78 stations.
Expected daily ridership is 200,000 by 2030, increasing to 320,000 by 2040, with a maximum capacity of 850,000.
Traffic congestion is projected to reduce by 20%, with long-term benefits estimated at over AED 56 billion, showing a benefit-to-cost ratio of 2.6.
5. Project Timeline & Investment
The construction contract is worth AED 20.5 billion, awarded to a consortium of international contractors.
The Blue Line is set to be operational on September 9, 2029, symbolically marking the Metro’s 20th anniversary.
6. Design Vision & Sustainable Features
Stations will feature seashell-inspired elevated structures and themed designs based on Heritage, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.
Seamless integration with buses, taxis, bike and scooter docks, electric vehicle charging, and accessible infrastructure.
All stations are designed to meet Platinum-level green building standards, making this Dubai’s first sustainable metro initiative.
