RTA announces smart gates on Dubai-Hatta road, other desert areas
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to revolutionize public transportation with the introduction of smart gates utilizing facial recognition technology. This innovation will allow commuters to access services without the need for physical nol cards, streamlining the travel experience across various modes of transport, including the Metro, tram, buses, abras, and taxis.
Unveiled at GITEX Global, the world's largest technology and startup exhibition, the smart gates employ advanced 3D cameras powered by artificial intelligence to verify commuters' identities in under five seconds. To use the system, passengers must register their biometric data; thereafter, they can simply look at the camera to gain access, with fares automatically deducted from their linked accounts.
Salahaldeen AlMarzooqi, Director of Automated Collection Systems at RTA, announced that the technology would undergo initial testing in select public transport stations with lower passenger volumes. Following successful trials, a broader rollout across all stations is planned for the coming year. This initiative is part of RTA's ongoing efforts to digitize services and enhance commuter convenience by transitioning from physical and digital nol cards to a seamless, media-less system.
In addition to public transport, RTA has implemented facial recognition technology at its Al Garhoud headquarters, enabling employees to access premises without IDs or fingerprints. Similarly, Dubai Airports are trialing a biometric and facial recognition system to offer passengers a touchless travel experience, with plans for implementation later this year.
